The Super 2 Challenge, as it has unofficially been called, began in fall of 1998 as a result of the break-up of the East Penn Conference. In desperate need of independent games for the 1998-99 season, the 5 remaining conference members (Allen, Becahi, CCHS, Dieruff and Emmaus) developed a challenge concept pitting the EPC against the Philadelphia Catholic League in a variety of sports. The sports selected for that first year were cross-country, field hockey, boys’ soccer, boys’ basketball, girls’ basketball, wrestling, baseball, softball and track. Once the concept and match-ups were solidified the conference focused on finding a sponsor. Service Electric Station Manager Don Hunt enthusiastically embraced the idea and offered financial backing and television coverage for the entire series; thus the origin of the original name, “The Service Electric Super 2 EPC – PCL Challenge”. Throughout its 9 year history the challenge has gone through some necessary changes such as the streamlining of sports, the addition of new venues, the infusion of new opponents and the unfortunate and untimely passing of Don Hunt. .
